POWERED EXTENSION · CONTROLLED RETRACTION
Bidirectional hydraulic actuation for machines that require controlled force and movement in both directions.
Double-acting cylinders use pressure on alternate sides of the piston to power both extension and retraction. This makes them suitable for repetitive motion, controlled return, clamping, steering, positioning and other functions where gravity or an external load cannot provide a reliable return stroke.

APPLICATION FIT
Why This Cylinder Type Is Selected
Selection should be based on machine function, load path, available space and service conditions—not only on nominal dimensions.
Force in Both Directions
Hydraulic pressure controls extension and retraction, supporting positive movement through the complete cycle.
Repeatable Machine Motion
Bore, rod size, flow and cushioning can be reviewed around speed, force and cycle requirements.
Broad Configuration Range
Welded, tie-rod and heavy-duty constructions can be supplied with application-specific mountings and ports.

TECHNICAL INPUTS
Match Force, Speed and Control Requirements
A double-acting cylinder must be sized for both cap-end extension force and the lower annular-area retraction force.
- Required push and pull force at the available working pressure
- Bore, rod diameter and stroke, or the machine load and geometry
- Target extension and retraction speed plus available pump flow
- Mounting style, pin centers and side-load conditions
- Port thread, port orientation, cushioning and position-sensing needs
- Duty cycle, temperature, fluid and contamination exposure

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders FAQ
These answers provide a starting point. Final cylinder selection should be checked against the actual machine and hydraulic circuit.
Why choose double-acting instead of single-acting?
Choose double-acting operation when the return stroke must be powered and controlled rather than relying on gravity, a spring or an external load.
Is extension force the same as retraction force?
No. Retraction force is based on the piston area minus the rod area, so it is normally lower at the same pressure.
What causes uneven or jerky movement?
Air in the circuit, unstable flow, contamination, seal friction, misalignment or excessive side load can all affect movement. The complete hydraulic circuit and mounting geometry should be checked.
