What Causes a Hydraulic Cylinder to Chatter or Move Jerkingly?

Hydraulic cylinder chatter can result from trapped air, cavitation, stick-slip, valve instability, contamination, side load, or a changing mechanical load.

Hydraulic cylinder chatter is repeated vibration, noise or jerky motion during travel. Common causes include trapped air, cavitation, stick-slip friction, unstable flow control, contamination, binding, side load and a mechanical load that changes faster than the circuit can control. The sound alone does not identify the failed component.

Separate hydraulic and mechanical symptoms

Record where in the stroke chatter occurs, which direction is affected, oil temperature, load, commanded speed and whether pressure fluctuates. Compare loaded and unloaded movement only when the machine can be tested safely.

Inspect pins, bushings, mounts, linkage and surrounding structure. Mechanical binding or a changing lever angle can create pressure oscillation that looks like a valve or cylinder problem.

Check for air and cavitation

Air makes the fluid springy and can cause delayed or bouncing motion. It may enter through low reservoir level, suction leaks, recent service or poor return-path design.

Cavitation occurs when local pressure falls too low for the demanded flow. Pump noise, aerated fluid and inlet restrictions require prompt investigation because repeated cavitation can damage components.

Investigate stick-slip and contamination

At low speed, seal friction and insufficient lubrication can alternate between sticking and sliding. Incorrect seals, damaged rod or bore surfaces, side load and unsuitable flow control can intensify the effect.

Contamination can make valve spools, load-control valves or cylinder surfaces move inconsistently. Oil condition, filters and component cleanliness should be evaluated together.

Verify the circuit and correction

Review metering direction, counterbalance or overcenter settings, load-control valve stability, pump compensation and return restrictions using the approved schematic and test procedure.

After correcting the cause, verify smooth motion across the full stroke, temperature range and representative load. Record pressure, speed and observations rather than accepting a brief unloaded cycle as proof.

Frequently asked questions

Will bleeding always stop chatter?

No. Bleeding helps only when air is the cause; valve, mechanical, contamination and surface problems require different corrections.

Can increasing pressure cure jerky movement?

Raising pressure without diagnosis can increase risk and may hide the real restriction or instability.

When should the machine be stopped?

Stop when motion is unpredictable, load control is affected, cavitation is suspected or structural binding or leakage appears.
