How to Select Seals for Hydraulic Cylinders

Select hydraulic cylinder seals from groove geometry, pressure, fluid, temperature, speed, surface finish, contamination and duty—not dimensions alone.

Hydraulic cylinder seal selection starts with the exact groove and hardware geometry, then matches pressure, fluid, temperature, speed, surface finish, contamination and duty cycle. Bore and rod diameter alone cannot identify a reliable seal. The piston seal, rod seal, wiper, static seals, backup rings and wear rings must function as one compatible system.

This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore Zhenqiang Hydraulic.

Identify the hardware and groove

Use the controlled drawing or measure groove diameter, width, depth, clearances, lead-in chamfers and adjacent surfaces after safe disassembly.

Confirm whether the seal is piston, rod, wiper or static. Similar-looking profiles can have different pressure direction and installation requirements.

Match the operating envelope

Define normal and peak pressure, speed, temperature, fluid chemistry, duty cycle and expected leakage performance. Include pressure reversals and dwell periods.

Material compatibility must include startup and maximum temperatures as well as additives, water content and cleaning fluids.

Check surfaces and extrusion gaps

Rod and bore finish, hardness, geometry and damage directly affect sealing. A new seal cannot compensate for deep scoring, pitting or excessive wear.

Clearance, pressure and temperature influence extrusion risk and backup-ring needs. Bearings and wear rings also control guidance and metal separation.

Validate installation and service

Use protected installation tools, correct orientation and compatible lubrication. Avoid twisting, nicking or overstretching seals.

After assembly, complete controlled cycling and leakage testing. Document the final seal identities so the next rebuild does not rely on damaged samples.

Frequently asked questions

Can seals be selected from bore and rod size?

No. Groove, profile, fluid, pressure, temperature and surface data are also required.

Is harder seal material always better?

No. Hardness affects friction, conformability, wear and installation; the complete duty governs.

Should the old seal be copied?

Use it only as evidence. Wear and deformation can hide the original profile and dimensions.
