How to Repair a Hydraulic Cylinder Rod: Damage Assessment Guide

Assess hydraulic cylinder rod scoring, pitting, bending, coating loss and thread damage before choosing polishing, recoating, remanufacture or replacement.

Hydraulic cylinder rod repair depends on the type, depth and location of damage. Raised contamination may be removable within surface-finish limits, while pitting, coating loss, bending, cracks or thread damage require a controlled engineering decision. The repaired rod must restore dimensions, straightness, surface integrity and compatibility with the rod seal and bearing.

This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore Zhenqiang Hydraulic.

Classify the rod damage

Clean the rod and inspect the full travel surface, threads, shoulders and connection. Record scoring, pits, corrosion, impact marks, coating flaking, runout and cracks.

Measure diameter, straightness and surface condition. Visual shine alone cannot establish serviceability.

Find the machine cause

Check alignment, mounts, pins, gland bearing, wiper, contamination, side load, rod stability and collision history.

A repaired rod will fail again if the machine continues to bend it, contaminate it or drag it through a damaged bearing.

Choose an appropriate repair route

Minor raised material may be carefully corrected under an approved finish limit. Deep defects may need stripping, material restoration, grinding and a qualified coating process.

Replacement is often more controllable for cracks, severe bending, unknown material, critical fatigue duty or damage near load-bearing threads.

Requalify the rod and cylinder

Verify final diameter, straightness, finish, hardness or coating properties and threads. Use nondestructive examination where the duty requires it.

Replace damaged seals and bearings, assemble cleanly and complete guarded motion, leakage and pressure testing.

Frequently asked questions

Can scratches be polished out?

Only if final diameter and finish remain within approved limits and base damage is absent.

Can a bent rod be heated straight?

Not without an approved process and material requalification.

Should seals be replaced after rod repair?

Inspect and normally replace seals or bearings exposed to the damaged surface.
