How to Control a Hydraulic Cylinder: Direction, Speed and Load

A hydraulic cylinder is controlled by directing flow to the correct chamber, metering flow for speed and managing pressure and load energy with properly selected valves. The cylinder, pump, directional valve, flow control, load-control valve and machine structure must be designed as one system.

A hydraulic cylinder is controlled by directing flow to the correct chamber, metering flow for speed and managing pressure and load energy with properly selected valves. The cylinder, pump, directional valve, flow control, load-control valve and machine structure must be designed as one system.

This article gives general engineering guidance for trained personnel. The machine manufacturer’s manual, hydraulic schematic, lockout procedure and controlled drawing take precedence.

Direct answer and limits

A directional valve alone may start and stop motion, but it may not safely hold an overrunning load or control deceleration. Meter-in, meter-out, pressure-compensated flow control, counterbalance and pilot-operated check functions solve different problems and cannot be substituted without circuit analysis.

Separate the observed symptom from its cause. Record pressure, flow, fluid condition, temperature, load, position and machine geometry before adjusting the circuit or replacing parts.

Safe procedure

Identify hydraulic, pneumatic, gravitational and mechanical stored energy. Lower or support loads, isolate power and verify the zero-energy state at designated test points before opening any connection.

  1. Define extension, retraction, hold, float and emergency behaviors for every machine operating state. Record the result and acceptance criterion.
  2. Calculate required force from load and linkage, then confirm available pressure without relying only on relief setting. Record the result and acceptance criterion.
  3. Set target speed from stroke time and effective area, and verify pump flow, valve capacity and port losses. Record the result and acceptance criterion.
  4. Choose directional and flow-control strategies that remain stable as load and temperature change. Record the result and acceptance criterion.
  5. Add load-holding, cushioning or deceleration controls where gravity, inertia or hose failure could cause uncontrolled motion. Record the result and acceptance criterion.
  6. Commission with low energy, measured pressure and speed, then validate loaded cycles and fault conditions. Record the result and acceptance criterion.

Common mistakes and completion checks

Do not loosen a pressurized fitting, increase relief pressure to overcome an unknown restriction, strike a rod, or assume visible movement proves the circuit is safe. Uncontrolled shortcuts can release a load, inject oil through skin or contaminate precision components.

After the work, perform a low-energy functional check before normal service. Observe pressure, speed, alignment, noise, temperature, leakage and end-of-stroke behavior. Stop if pressure rises unexpectedly, motion remains erratic or the structure deflects.

Frequently asked questions

Does pressure control cylinder speed?

Primarily, flow determines speed while pressure develops in response to load. Restrictions can change both pressure loss and speed. Verify the final method against the machine documentation.

Should flow be metered into or out of the cylinder?

It depends on load behavior and circuit stability. Overrunning loads often require controlled meter-out and load-control design. Verify the final method against the machine documentation.

Can a check valve hold a suspended load?

A suitable load-holding circuit may use check functions, but valve selection, placement, pilot ratio and failure mode require engineering review. Verify the final method against the machine documentation.
