Hydraulic cylinders may need bleeding after installation, hose replacement, component service or any event that allows air into the circuit. Some systems purge air through normal low-speed cycling and the reservoir return path, while others provide dedicated bleed points or require a machine-specific procedure. Never loosen a pressurized fitting as an improvised bleeding method.
This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore Zhenqiang Hydraulic.
Recognize trapped air symptoms
Common signs include spongy response, delayed movement, jerking, noise, foaming and inconsistent position. These symptoms can also come from cavitation, valve instability, contamination or mechanical binding.
Check reservoir level, suction leaks, recent service and return flow before assuming the cylinder alone contains air.
Follow the circuit-specific method
Support loads, isolate hazards and review the OEM procedure. Confirm whether the cylinder is single-acting, double-acting, telescopic or part of a series circuit.
Where permitted, operate at low pressure and slow speed through controlled strokes while maintaining correct reservoir level. Use dedicated bleed points only as designed.
Avoid creating new hazards
Do not crack open hoses or ports under pressure. High-pressure oil can penetrate skin, and a released load can move without warning.
Prevent the pump from running dry and do not overfill the reservoir. Keep all added fluid filtered and compatible with the existing system.
Confirm the air source is corrected
After bleeding, verify smooth movement, stable fluid level, normal sound, temperature and pressure behavior under representative conditions.
If air returns, inspect suction plumbing, reservoir return design, cylinder orientation, fittings and component seals. Repeated bleeding without correcting ingress is not a repair.
Practical reference
| Observation | Possible explanation |
|---|---|
| Spongy response | Compressible air in the working volume |
| Foam in reservoir | Aeration or return disturbance |
| Noise under high flow | Air or cavitation |
| Jerking at one position | Binding or geometry as well as air |
| Air returns after bleeding | Ingress source remains |

Frequently asked questions
Do all cylinders have bleed screws?
No. The system design and OEM procedure determine how air is removed.
Can cycling remove air?
Some circuits self-purge during controlled low-speed cycling, but not every orientation or design does.
Why is air harmful?
It reduces stiffness, causes unpredictable motion and can contribute to heat, oxidation and component damage.
