How to Size a Hydraulic Cylinder

A step-by-step guide to cylinder force, bore, rod, stroke, flow, mounting and environment.

Cylinder sizing starts with force and stroke, but a reliable specification must also address rod stability, mounting geometry, speed, duty cycle and the operating environment.

1. Define the Load and Motion

Record the load, direction of movement, stroke, required speed, acceleration and cycle frequency. Include linkage geometry because the cylinder force may not act directly on the load.

2. Estimate Bore from Force and Pressure

Use the required force and available system pressure to estimate piston area, then select a practical bore with appropriate allowance for losses and application safety factors.

3. Check Rod Diameter and Buckling

Long strokes under compression can create buckling risk. Rod diameter, unsupported length, mounting condition and load alignment must be reviewed together.

4. Confirm Flow and Speed

Required flow depends on effective area and target speed. Extension and retraction speeds can differ because the effective areas differ.

5. Complete the Specification

  • Mounting style and pin dimensions
  • Port standard, size and position
  • Seals, temperature and fluid compatibility
  • Cushioning and position sensing
  • Finish, corrosion protection, marking and documentation
