hydraulic cylinder factory audit: Supplier Qualification Checklist

hydraulic cylinder factory audit checklist for B2B buyers: verify process control, traceability, inspection evidence, corrective action and scope before supplier approval.

Question: What should a buyer verify during a hydraulic cylinder factory audit?

Answer: Audit the controls that affect the exact cylinder and order: drawing revision, incoming material identification, machining and assembly control, calibrated inspection, test records, nonconformance handling and shipment traceability. A clean workshop tour is not evidence by itself. Define the product and process scope first, using the company site and the OEM review stages as context.

Trace one representative order

Ask the supplier to trace a representative cylinder from purchase order to shipment using a controlled sample record. Confirm the product family, process route and acceptance requirements match the order you intend to qualify. Avoid requesting confidential customer records; anonymized evidence or a witnessed demonstration may be enough.

Audit checklist

  • Document control: approved drawing, revision and bill of material link to the work order.
  • Incoming materials: identification, agreed certificates, inspection criteria and segregation of rejected material.
  • Production: defined operation sequence, work instructions and in-process records.
  • Assembly: cleanliness controls, seal/component identification and protection from damage or contamination.
  • Measurement: gauges have unique IDs, appropriate ranges and current calibration status.
  • Testing: the test specification identifies the cylinder, method, acceptance criteria, result and inspector.
  • Nonconformance: containment, root-cause analysis, corrective action and effectiveness check are recorded.
  • Shipment: identification, preservation, packing list and documents match the purchase order.

Evidence: certificate versus product record

ISO explains that ISO 9001 defines requirements for a quality management system, not exactly how each organization must operate; certification is performed by independent certification bodies, not ISO. Verify holder, scope, location and validity with the issuer, then inspect product-specific evidence separately. See ISO’s explanation of ISO 9001.

A QMS certificate does not replace the approved drawing, inspection plan or acceptance test. Likewise, one successful test does not prove every process is controlled. Link each audit finding to a control, owner, record and follow-up date. The Knowledge Center is background only; supplier approval should rely on objective evidence.

Close with a risk-ranked action list

Record the requirement, objective evidence, gap, containment needed, owner and due date. Distinguish critical issues affecting fit, pressure integrity or traceability from administrative improvements. Agree whether corrective actions must be verified before first-article approval or before shipment.

Next step

Define the audit scope and product family before requesting a supplier visit.
