Compressing or retracting a hydraulic cylinder requires a controlled return path for displaced oil and a safe method of applying force. Secure the load, isolate power, identify both ports and valve states, and never use uncontrolled external force against trapped fluid.

To clean rust from a hydraulic cylinder, first determine whether corrosion is on a non-sealing exterior surface or on the chrome-plated rod. Loose surface rust on painted hardware may be cleaned and recoated, but pits, flaking chrome or damage within the seal travel usually require professional repair or rod replacement.
