Which Oil Is Used in a Hydraulic Cylinder? Selection Guide

Hydraulic cylinders use the system fluid specified by the machine OEM; viscosity, additives, seal compatibility, temperature and cleanliness must all match.

A hydraulic cylinder uses the fluid specified for the complete hydraulic system, not a separate oil chosen only for the cylinder. Mineral hydraulic oils are common, but fire-resistant, biodegradable, water-containing and other fluids are used in specific applications. The correct choice must match pumps, valves, seals, temperature, pressure and environmental requirements.

This guide is for industrial service and procurement planning. Follow the machine manufacturer’s procedure and use qualified personnel. Explore verified product families at Thủy lực Chấn Cường.

Start with the machine and component specification

Use the OEM manual, reservoir label and controlled fluid list. Confirm the required fluid family, viscosity grade, performance specification and prohibited mixtures.

Do not select oil by color or by what is already in an unlabelled container. Mixing incompatible fluids can damage seals, reduce lubrication and create deposits.

Match viscosity to operating temperature

Viscosity must be suitable across cold start, normal operation and maximum temperature. Fluid that is too thick can cause suction and flow losses; fluid that is too thin can increase leakage and reduce film strength.

The correct grade depends on the system and climate. A generic cylinder article cannot safely prescribe one ISO viscosity grade for every machine.

Verify seals, materials and environmental duty

Seal compatibility depends on fluid chemistry and temperature. Paint, hoses, accumulators and filter media may also have compatibility limits.

Fire-resistant or biodegradable fluids require deliberate system design and maintenance. They should not be substituted without OEM and component approval.

Control cleanliness and fluid condition

New oil is not automatically clean enough for the system. Filter during transfer as required, use sealed containers and protect ports during service.

Monitor water, particle contamination, oxidation and viscosity according to the maintenance plan. Investigate repeated darkening, odor, foam or abnormal temperature rather than merely topping up.

Frequently asked questions

Can engine oil be used in a hydraulic cylinder?

Only if the complete system manufacturer explicitly specifies an approved engine-oil grade.

Can different hydraulic oils be mixed?

Do not mix unless compatibility and OEM approval are confirmed.

Does the cylinder need to be filled separately?

Usually the cylinder is filled and bled as part of the system commissioning procedure.
