Two hydraulic cylinders do not remain synchronized merely because they share a pump line. Small differences in load, friction, leakage, geometry and hose pressure loss cause one actuator to lead. Reliable balancing requires a circuit or mechanical strategy designed for the required accuracy, load profile and safety function.

This guidance is general. Machine drawings, qualified hydraulic engineers and approved lockout procedures take precedence, especially when cylinders support a load.

Parallel plumbing alone does not guarantee equal motion

In a simple parallel circuit, oil follows the path requiring less pressure. The lightly loaded or lower-friction cylinder can move first while the other lags.

Equal bore and stroke help establish similar geometry, but manufacturing tolerances and changing machine loads still create position error. Needle valves may trim speed at one condition without holding balance across the full duty range.

Mechanical linking can enforce position

A rigid cross-member, shaft, rack or guided structure can force both sides to move together. The machine structure then carries the balancing load and must be designed for the resulting stress.

Mechanical binding, misaligned pins or a flexible frame can transfer damaging side load into the cylinders. Guides and mount geometry should be inspected before blaming the hydraulic circuit.

Flow dividers improve open-loop synchronization

A pressure-compensated flow divider splits incoming flow into controlled branches and can combine return flow. Its expected accuracy depends on flow range, viscosity, pressure difference and component design.

Flow division controls rate rather than absolute position. Leakage and accumulated error may still require end-of-stroke correction, position checking or periodic rephasing.

Series and rephasing circuits use matched displacement

In a series arrangement, return flow from one cylinder drives the next. Cylinder areas must be matched so displaced volume produces the intended downstream movement.

Rephasing cylinders add internal bypass near a reference end position to correct accumulated error. Replacing one cylinder without matching the set can destroy synchronization.

Feedback control provides higher accuracy

Position sensors, proportional valves and a controller can compare cylinder positions and adjust flow continuously. This approach can handle changing loads more accurately than passive balancing.

The control system needs a defined safe state for sensor, valve, power or communication failure. It also requires commissioning, calibration and machine-level validation.

Information required for a two-cylinder review

  • Machine geometry, guides, mount locations and load distribution through the stroke.
  • Bore, rod, stroke, installation lengths, porting and cylinder construction.
  • Pump flow, working pressure, valve arrangement, hose sizes and circuit diagram.
  • Acceptable position difference, speed range, cycle rate and end-of-stroke behavior.
  • Load-holding, emergency-stop and failure-mode requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can adjustable flow controls synchronize two cylinders?

They can trim one operating point, but changing load and leakage usually prevent reliable synchronization.

Should cylinders be connected in series or parallel?

The correct choice depends on load, required force, available pressure, displacement matching and acceptable error.

Do equal cylinders move equally?

Not automatically. Circuit resistance, load, friction, structure and leakage still differ.
