A log splitter cylinder is sized from required splitting force, available working pressure, wedge travel, acceptable cycle time and structural geometry. Bore determines theoretical extension force, rod diameter affects retraction area and buckling resistance, and stroke must cover the required wood length without creating hard-stop loads. There is no single correct cylinder size for every splitter.
This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore Thủy lực Chấn Cường.
Estimate the required cylinder force
Determine splitting-force target from the intended material, wedge geometry and machine design. Required piston area is force divided by available pressure.
Use verified working pressure rather than assuming the relief setting is continuously available. Include realistic losses and design margins.
Select bore and rod
Calculate preliminary bore from piston area, then confirm available standard or custom dimensions. Larger bore increases force but also increases oil volume and can slow the cycle.
Choose rod diameter for retraction force, compression stability, fatigue and connection strength across the full extended length.
Set stroke and installed lengths
Stroke must move the pusher through the required working range. Confirm retracted and extended pin-center lengths, clearances and wedge position.
Avoid using the cylinder’s internal stop as the routine machine stop unless the design specifically allows it.
Match the pump, valve and structure
Flow divided by active area determines theoretical speed. Check pump flow, valve rating, hose losses, reservoir capacity, cooling and return pressure.
Pins, mounts, beam, wedge, guards and load path must withstand the force. Validate the complete machine rather than selecting the cylinder in isolation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a larger bore make a better splitter?
Not automatically; it increases force and oil demand and may slow the cycle.
Can tonnage be calculated from bore only?
No. Pressure and actual machine conditions are also required.
Why is return faster?
The rod reduces the rod-end area, so equal flow usually produces faster retraction.
