To tell whether a hydraulic cylinder is bad, separate the cylinder from faults in the pump, valve, hoses, load-control devices, mounts and machine linkage. Leakage, drift, slow movement, heat and weak force are symptoms, not diagnoses. A safe test plan records conditions and isolates one possible path at a time.
This guide is for industrial service and procurement planning. Follow the machine manufacturer’s procedure and use qualified personnel. Explore verified product families at Thủy lực Chấn Cường.
Start with a visual and mechanical inspection
Look for external leakage, a damaged rod, loose gland, cracked weld, distorted mount, worn pins, hose damage and contact marks. Check whether the symptom occurs at one position or throughout travel.
Do not operate a visibly cracked, severely bent or uncontrolled load-holding cylinder. Support the machine and remove stored energy before hands-on inspection.
Compare pressure, motion and load behavior
Record command, direction, pressure, speed, oil temperature and load. Low force may come from insufficient pressure or poor geometry rather than the cylinder.
Jerky motion may reflect air, cavitation, valve instability, contamination, stick-slip or mechanical binding. Observe both directions because piston areas differ.
Separate internal bypass from valve leakage
Cylinder drift can be caused by piston-seal bypass, but it can also pass through directional or load-control valves or change with fluid temperature. Use the approved isolation and leakage test for the circuit.
Never loosen a pressurized line to diagnose flow. Use rated instruments, guarded test methods and competent personnel.
Decide whether to repair, replace or investigate the system
A repairable cylinder may need seals, bearings, surface restoration or dimensional correction. Cracks, severe scoring, distorted mounts, unsuitable material or repeated failures may favor replacement or redesign.
Document the root cause and correct contamination, alignment, pressure spikes or side load before returning the machine to service.
Practical reference
| Symptom | Possible cylinder cause | Other possible cause |
|---|---|---|
| External oil leak | Rod seal, static seal or cracked boundary | Loose fitting or hose |
| Drift under load | Piston bypass | Valve leakage or thermal change |
| Weak force | Internal leakage or damaged piston | Low pressure or poor linkage angle |
| Jerky travel | Surface or seal stick-slip | Air, valve instability or binding |
| Hot operation | Internal leakage or friction | Circuit throttling or cooling problem |

Frequently asked questions
Does drift prove the piston seal is bad?
No. Valves, load-control devices and temperature effects must be isolated.
Can pressure alone prove cylinder condition?
No. Pressure, flow, leakage, movement and mechanical condition must be considered together.
When should the cylinder be removed?
Remove it when safe in-machine testing cannot isolate the fault or inspection finds damage requiring bench evaluation.
