How to Store Hydraulic Cylinders and Prevent Corrosion

Store hydraulic cylinders clean, dry, capped, identified, and protected from corrosion, contamination, impact, and unsupported handling loads.

Hydraulic cylinders should be stored clean, dry, capped and protected from corrosion, contamination, impact and unsupported handling loads. The storage plan should preserve the rod surface, seals, ports, mounts and identity while making periodic inspection possible.

Prepare the cylinder before storage

Confirm the cylinder identity, condition and preservation requirement. Clean external contamination without pushing debris past the wiper, repair damaged protective coating as approved and document any existing rod, port or mount damage.

Use a compatible internal preservation fluid or the manufacturer’s specified procedure. Do not mix unknown preservatives with the future operating fluid.

Protect the rod and ports

Retract the rod where the design and preservation procedure allow because this reduces exposed surface. Protect any remaining exposed rod with an approved corrosion barrier and a nonabrasive cover that does not trap water.

Install clean pressure-rated transport or storage plugs and caps on every port. A loose rag or tape does not provide reliable contamination control and may leave debris or adhesive.

Choose the storage environment and support

Store indoors in a dry, temperature-controlled area away from welding fumes, salt, chemicals, grinding debris, ultraviolet exposure and standing water. Keep cylinders off the floor and away from traffic.

Support the cylinder at suitable structural points so the rod, ports, sensors and mounts do not carry unintended loads. Secure long or heavy units against rolling and use rated lifting points during handling.

Inspect and release from storage

Set an inspection interval based on storage duration and environment. Check covers, caps, corrosion protection, leakage, packaging, identification and support condition. Record each inspection.

Before installation, remove preservation materials using a compatible method, inspect the rod and ports, confirm fluid compatibility and complete the specified functional and pressure checks. Do not assume a long-stored cylinder remains ready for service.

What to send for an engineering review

  • Machine manufacturer, model, serial range and cylinder function.
  • Controlled drawing, part number, photographs and verified dimensions.
  • Pressure, force, speed, duty cycle, fluid and operating temperature.
  • Mounting, load direction, environment, observed problem and previous repairs.
  • Required quantity, documentation, acceptance tests and delivery destination.

Frequently asked questions

Should a cylinder always be stored fully retracted?

Often this reduces exposed rod, but follow the design-specific preservation and orientation instructions.

Can plastic film be wrapped tightly around the rod?

Only if the method does not trap moisture or damage the surface. Use an approved breathable or sealed preservation system.

How often should stored cylinders be inspected?

Set the interval from the storage environment, preservation system, criticality and manufacturer guidance.
