A hydraulic cylinder is a mechanical actuator that converts hydraulic-fluid pressure into linear force and motion. Pressurized oil acts on a piston or plunger inside a barrel, moving a rod or stage to lift, push, pull, clamp, steer or position a machine component. The cylinder is only one part of a complete hydraulic system, so its real performance also depends on the pump, valves, hoses, load-control devices, fluid and machine geometry.

How does a hydraulic cylinder create force?
Pressure acts over an effective area. On the cap end of a conventional double-acting cylinder, the full piston area produces extension force. On the rod end, the rod subtracts area, so retraction force is normally lower at the same pressure.
Theoretical force is pressure multiplied by effective area. Actual machine output is lower because seals, bearings, valves, lines and linkage geometry introduce friction and losses. A safe design therefore starts with the machine load case, not a catalog bore alone.
What are the main parts?
A typical cylinder includes a barrel, piston, piston rod, gland or head, end cap, seals, wiper, wear rings or bearings, ports and mounting ends. Some designs add cushions, position sensors, manifolds or load-control valves.
Each part has a specific job: the barrel guides and contains pressure, the rod transmits force, seals separate pressure zones, bearings control alignment and mounts transfer load into the machine structure.
What types are commonly used?
Single-acting cylinders use hydraulic pressure primarily in one direction and return through gravity, a spring or an external load. Double-acting cylinders use pressure for both extension and retraction. Telescopic cylinders provide long travel from a short closed length.
Tie-rod, welded, mill-duty, plunger, double-rod, tandem and rephasing designs solve different packaging, load, maintenance and synchronization requirements. The correct type follows from the duty and interface.
Where are hydraulic cylinders used?
Hydraulic cylinders operate booms, buckets, outriggers, steering systems, clamps, presses, lifting platforms, agricultural implements, mining equipment, sanitation vehicles and many other machines.
Applications that hold or control elevated loads require a complete safety strategy. A cylinder should not be assumed to hold a load merely because its control valve is centered.

Frequently asked questions
Is a hydraulic cylinder a motor?
Both are hydraulic actuators, but a cylinder produces linear motion while a hydraulic motor produces rotary motion.
Does a larger bore always mean a better cylinder?
No. A larger bore increases force and oil demand but can reduce speed for a given flow and may not fit the structure.
Can bore and stroke alone identify a replacement?
No. Rod, lengths, mounts, ports, pressure, speed, stability and load-control requirements also matter.
