How to Calculate Hydraulic Cylinder Bore Diameter From Force and Pressure

Calculate preliminary hydraulic cylinder bore from required extension force and available pressure, then validate losses, rod side, stability and structure.

A preliminary hydraulic cylinder bore diameter can be calculated from required extension force and available pressure. Required piston area is force divided by pressure, and bore diameter is D = √(4A/π). This calculation gives a theoretical starting point only. The machine geometry, circuit losses, retraction force, rod stability, mounts and pressure-boundary design still require validation.

Determine cylinder force first

Calculate the force required at the cylinder across the complete mechanism travel. Include payload, self-weight, friction, acceleration, impact and applicable margins.

Do not use the external load directly when levers or changing angles separate it from cylinder force.

Calculate area and bore

Use A = F/P with consistent units. Then calculate D = √(4A/π). If using newtons and pascals, area is square metres and diameter is metres.

Use the pressure actually available at the cylinder during operation, not simply the pump nameplate or maximum relief setting.

Check the rod-side requirement

Retraction force uses annular area: π(D² − d²)/4. A bore that meets extension force may not meet pull-force requirements with the selected rod.

Rod diameter is not chosen from annular area alone. It also needs tension, compression buckling, fatigue and connection checks.

Select and validate a practical size

Choose a manufacturable bore that meets the calculated area with appropriate allowance. Review oil volume, speed, valve flow, heat and package constraints.

Verify barrel, end closures, seals, ports, pins, mounts and machine structure. Document assumptions and perform design review before production.

Frequently asked questions

Is outside barrel diameter the bore?

No. Bore is the finished internal diameter in which the piston operates.

Can I use relief pressure in the calculation?

Use verified working pressure for the defined condition and treat relief or transient limits separately.

Why choose a larger practical bore?

To meet required force after justified losses and margins, but unnecessary oversizing has penalties.
