Hydraulic cylinder stroke length is the linear travel between the defined fully retracted and fully extended positions. For many cylinders, stroke equals extended pin-center length minus retracted pin-center length, provided both measurements use the same reference points and the cylinder reaches its designed stops. Stroke is not the exposed rod length and should not be estimated from barrel length.
This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore Hydraulique Zhenqiang.
Define the reference points
Use pin centers, flange faces or another controlled mounting reference. Record whether spherical bearings, spacers or adjustable rod ends change the effective installation dimension.
The retracted and extended states must be defined by the cylinder design, not by a machine obstruction or an unverified external stop.
Measure stroke from installed lengths
When safe and permitted, measure the same reference-to-reference dimension at full retraction and full extension. Stroke = extended length − retracted length.
Support the load, isolate energy and follow the machine procedure. If full movement is unsafe, use the controlled drawing, part number or bench measurement instead.
Avoid common measurement errors
Do not substitute visible rod length, overall barrel length or tube length for stroke. Cushions and internal stops can make visual estimates misleading.
Check whether a telescopic cylinder specification refers to total stroke or an individual stage. Record units and measurement tolerance.
Use stroke in replacement and design
Confirm that the required stroke produces the complete machine motion without bottoming the cylinder against an external hard stop. Verify both closed and open clearances.
Stroke also affects oil volume, cycle time, rod stability and package length. Replacement selection therefore needs bore, rod, mounts, pressure, ports and duty as well as stroke.
Practical reference
| Dimension | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Retracted length | Reference distance at designed closed position |
| Extended length | Same reference distance at designed open position |
| Accident vasculaire cérébral | Extended length minus retracted length |
| Exposed rod | Not a reliable substitute for stroke |
| Machine travel | Result of cylinder stroke and linkage geometry |

Frequently asked questions
Is stroke the same as overall cylinder length?
No. Stroke is travel; overall length includes the body, gland, mounts and rod-end structure.
Can stroke be measured while installed?
Yes only when movement and load are controlled under the machine procedure.
Does a longer stroke always fit?
No. It can create interference, stability and hard-stop problems.
