A pneumatic cylinder should not be used as a hydraulic cylinder unless the manufacturer has explicitly rated that exact design for hydraulic fluid, pressure and duty. Hydraulic systems can impose different pressure, sealing, lubrication, material, leakage and load-holding requirements. Likewise, operating a hydraulic cylinder with compressed air creates different control and safety behavior.
This article provides general engineering guidance. Machine-specific safety procedures, controlled drawings and qualified hydraulic personnel take precedence, especially where a cylinder supports or controls a load.
Pressure rating is only one difference
A component needs suitable barrel, end closures, rod, mounts, ports and safety factors for the intended fluid pressure and load.
A low test pressure does not prove that a pneumatic cylinder is appropriate for hydraulic service or pressure spikes.
Seals and materials must match the medium
Pneumatic seals are selected for air lubrication, friction and speed, while hydraulic seals must control liquid leakage and extrusion under the specified fluid and temperature.
Fluid compatibility also applies to hoses, fittings, coatings, bearing materials and lubricants.
Compressibility changes machine behavior
Air stores energy because it is compressible. It can create spring-like motion, different speed control and sudden release behavior.
Hydraulic fluid is far less compressible, which supports force and position control but creates high-pressure injection hazards and requires contamination control.
Ports, cushions and valves may not transfer
Port sizes, cushioning, flow controls and directional valves are designed for the working medium and expected flow.
Load holding and overrunning loads require a complete circuit review; changing only the cylinder is not a safe conversion.
Use a cylinder rated for the intended system
Select a hydraulic cylinder from force, pressure, stroke, speed, mounts, stability, fluid, temperature, environment and test requirements.
If a dual-medium application is genuinely required, obtain written approval and ratings from the component manufacturer and design the full circuit accordingly.
Practical decision table
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Rated pressure and proof test | Confirms structural suitability for the medium |
| Seal materials and profiles | Controls leakage, friction and extrusion |
| Fluid compatibility | Protects seals, hoses, metals and coatings |
| Ports and valves | Determines flow, control and load behavior |
| Mounts and stability | Transfers the actual force safely |
| Manufacturer approval | Establishes the permitted service conditions |

Frequently asked questions
Can low-pressure oil be used in any air cylinder?
No. Pressure alone does not establish material, seal, structure or test suitability.
Can a hydraulic cylinder run on compressed air?
Only if specifically approved; compressed air changes energy storage, lubrication and control.
What is the safer alternative?
Use a cylinder and circuit designed and documented for the intended working medium.
