Hydraulic cylinders are rated through a combination of working pressure, bore, rod diameter, stroke, force, speed, mounting, stability, duty cycle, temperature, fluid, environment and test criteria. A pressure rating alone does not define safe machine capacity because the rod, mounts, linkage and load conditions may govern the application.
This article provides general engineering guidance. Machine-specific safety procedures, controlled drawings and qualified hydraulic personnel take precedence, especially where a cylinder supports or controls a load.
Working pressure defines an operating boundary
The design working pressure applies under stated conditions. Proof or test pressure is a validation condition, not a continuous operating target.
Pressure spikes, intensification and trapped pressure must be considered separately from the normal gauge reading.
Force depends on pressure and effective area
Extension force uses the piston area, while retraction force uses the annular area after subtracting the rod area. Real output is lower than the theoretical value because of losses and friction.
Machine linkage can multiply or reduce useful force at the tool. Rate the complete load case rather than the cylinder in isolation.
Rod and mounting stability can govern
A rod under compression must be checked for buckling using unsupported length, end conditions, alignment and maximum load.
Pins, bearings, eyes, clevises, trunnions, flanges and machine structures must carry the same load without excessive stress or side loading.
Speed and duty affect heat and life
Flow and effective area determine theoretical speed, but valves, ports, cushioning and load behavior influence actual motion.
Cycle frequency, dwell, impact, contamination and oil temperature affect seals, bearings, surfaces and maintenance intervals.
A rating needs defined acceptance criteria
Specifications should state dimensions, stroke, pressure, leakage, holding behavior, coating, cleanliness and documentation requirements.
OEM buyers should distinguish guaranteed requirements, design assumptions and test conditions so different supplier proposals can be compared.
Practical decision table
| Rating field | What it tells the buyer |
|---|---|
| Pression de service | Permitted operating pressure under defined conditions |
| Bore and rod | Effective areas, force relationship and structural input |
| Stroke and lengths | Required travel and machine geometry |
| Mounting rating | How force enters the machine structure |
| Duty and speed | Thermal, wear and dynamic demand |
| Environment | Seal, wiper, coating and material requirements |
| Test criteria | How conformance will be demonstrated |

Frequently asked questions
Is maximum pressure the same as working pressure?
No. Terms and test conditions must be defined by the supplier and project specification.
Does a larger bore always mean a better cylinder?
No. It changes force, speed, oil volume, size and system demand.
What rating should appear in an RFQ?
Pressure, force, geometry, speed, duty, environment, interfaces and acceptance tests.
