For OEMs, the useful question is not simply whether to add a sensor: it is what the machine must know, at what points in the stroke, and how that signal will be interpreted by the control system.

A position sensor does not, by itself, make a machine safe or guarantee a particular positioning accuracy. The complete result depends on the sensor, cylinder construction, mounting, controller, hydraulic circuit, mechanical compliance, calibration and operating conditions. Treat sensor selection as a cylinder-and-controls interface decision.

What position feedback can tell a machine

Continuous position feedback reports where the moving member is along its travel. Depending on the design, a controller can use that value for intermediate positioning, motion sequencing, stroke monitoring, synchronization logic or process data. A discrete limit switch answers a narrower question—whether motion has reached a defined point.

Commercial examples show that hydraulic cylinders can be offered with integrated linear displacement transducers. Parker describes continuous position sensing options for a heavy-duty cylinder family, while HYDAC describes a pressure-resistant linear transducer intended for integration into hydraulic cylinders. These are examples of available approaches, not a specification for every cylinder or evidence that one sensor design fits every application. Parker’s continuous feedback example; HYDAC’s integrated transducer information.

Compare the main sensing approaches

Discrete end-position switches: suitable when the control only needs confirmation at one or more fixed points. Confirm switch location, actuation method and environmental protection.

Continuous linear transducers: provide position over a measurement range. Confirm usable stroke, sensing principle, mounting envelope, electrical connector and replacement access.

External measurement: may be considered when cylinder modification is not appropriate, but the machine designer must assess exposure, alignment, protection and the relationship between measured structure and actual cylinder motion.

OEM checklist before specifying an instrumented cylinder

Define whether the control needs end-point confirmation, continuous position, or a position value used in a closed-loop function.

Specify measurement range and required resolution from the machine requirement; do not infer accuracy from a sensor’s output type alone.

Agree the electrical interface with the controls team: signal type, supply, connector, cable routing, controller compatibility and diagnostics.

Review pressure exposure, temperature, vibration, contamination, washdown, corrosion and cable protection for the actual duty cycle.

Resolve packaging early: available space, port and mounting arrangement, service access, and whether a sensor can be removed without full cylinder disassembly.

Define commissioning: calibration reference, zero position, fault response, plausibility limits and what the machine should do if the signal is lost or implausible.

Common specification mistakes

Common problems include naming a sensor output before defining the control task, overlooking connector clearance, assuming the sensor measures machine load, and treating a sensor reading as a safety function without a risk assessment. Position feedback measures position; it does not directly prove force, load holding, seal condition or structural integrity. Those functions need their own engineering methods and validation.

Questions to send with an RFQ

What are the required stroke and usable sensing range?

Is continuous measurement required, or only one or more position thresholds?

What controller, signal interface, connector and cable length are specified?

What pressure, temperature, vibration, contamination and corrosion conditions apply?

How will the assembly be calibrated, maintained and tested after replacement?

For cylinder configuration options, see custom hydraulic cylinders. Force estimation or measurement requires other system data and a validated method; position alone does not establish load.

Should every hydraulic cylinder have a continuous sensor?

No. Use continuous sensing when the machine function needs a position value. A simpler end-position switch or no sensor may be more appropriate for other duties.

Can a sensor be added to an existing cylinder?

Sometimes, but feasibility depends on cylinder construction, available space, pressure boundary, mounting and the chosen sensor. Obtain a design review before machining or modifying a pressure-containing component.

Discuss a Cylinder Requirement

Review Custom Cylinder Options

Learn how position feedback turns cylinder stroke into usable machine data, what OEMs should specify about sensing range, mounting, output and environment, and where sensor integration requires system-level review.

[20

post-1115","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-technical-guides
["GET
