Rephasing hydraulic cylinders are matched cylinders used in a series circuit so several sections of a machine can move in sequence at approximately the same rate. At the end of a designated stroke, an internal rephasing passage allows trapped oil and accumulated position error to bypass and reset the cylinder set.
This article provides general engineering guidance. Machine-specific instructions, controlled drawings, applicable safety procedures and qualified personnel take precedence whenever a cylinder supports, moves or restrains a load.
Series flow links the cylinders
Oil leaving the rod-end chamber of the first cylinder feeds the next cylinder. Because the downstream cylinder receives displaced volume rather than pump flow directly, the bore and rod areas must be intentionally matched across the set.
Replacing one cylinder with an ordinary unit or an unmatched bore-and-rod combination changes displaced volume. The machine may then run out of alignment even when every individual cylinder is free of external leakage.
Rephasing occurs at a defined end position
A rephasing port or groove becomes effective only near the designed end of stroke. Holding the circuit at that position briefly lets oil pass and helps each cylinder reach its reference position.
The rephasing direction, required hold time and safe operating procedure depend on the original design. Operators should follow the equipment manual rather than repeatedly forcing a stalled cylinder against its stop.
Small errors accumulate between rephasing cycles
Internal leakage, compressibility, unequal loads, hose expansion, friction and dimensional tolerance can cause position differences during operation. Rephasing corrects accumulated error; it does not eliminate every transient difference while the cylinders move.
If the machine will not stay level between cycles, inspect the complete circuit. Binding structures, worn pivots, incorrect hose routing, load imbalance and valve leakage can imitate a cylinder matching problem.
Replacement requires complete set data
A replacement supplier needs the sequence position, bore, rod, stroke, retracted length, mount geometry, port details and rephasing feature location for every cylinder in the set. One cylinder alone does not describe the displacement relationship.
The safest approach is to work from controlled drawings or measure and identify the full set. Do not infer a rephasing design from external appearance or a shared mounting style.
Testing must evaluate synchronized behavior
A bench pressure test checks containment and leakage, but it does not prove that a multi-cylinder machine will remain synchronized. Acceptance should include circuit installation, full-stroke rephasing and movement under representative loading.
Record position difference before and after rephasing, observe for binding and verify that no section reaches a mechanical limit prematurely. Stop testing if the structure twists or a load becomes unstable.

| Cylinder sequence | Defines displaced-volume relationship | Position of every cylinder in the series |
| Bore and rod area | Controls volume transferred downstream | Matched design values and tolerances |
| Rephasing feature | Resets accumulated position error | Direction, location and full-stroke procedure |
| Machine structure | Can force unequal movement | Pins, pivots, guides and load distribution |

Frequently asked questions
Are rephasing cylinders ordinary double-acting cylinders?
No. They include matched geometry and a rephasing feature intended for a series circuit.
Can one cylinder be replaced independently?
Only when the replacement matches the controlled design and its displacement relationship with the entire set.
Why must the machine reach full stroke?
The internal rephasing passage normally becomes effective only near the designed end position.
