How to Mount a Hydraulic Cylinder Correctly and Avoid Side Load

Mount a hydraulic cylinder with aligned pivots, correct pins and bearings, free articulation, protected hoses and no structural side load.

A hydraulic cylinder should be mounted so its force travels through the intended axis while the ends can articulate as designed. Incorrect mounting creates side load, bearing wear, rod scoring, seal leakage, pin damage and structural fatigue. Proper installation verifies geometry, pins, alignment, lubrication and hose movement before full-load operation.

This guide supports industrial engineering and procurement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions and qualified safety procedures. Explore الهيدروليكية تشنغتشيانغ.

Confirm mount type and load path

Identify clevis, eye, cross-tube, trunnion, flange or foot mounting from the controlled drawing. Each mount transfers force and moment differently.

Check that pivots align throughout travel and that the machine structure carries reaction loads without forcing the cylinder to act as a guide.

Prepare pins, bearings and interfaces

Inspect pin diameter, straightness, surface, retainers, bushings and lug spacing. Clean grease passages and install the specified spacers and spherical bearings.

Do not draw misaligned lugs together with pins or bolts. Correct structural alignment before installation.

Install without damaging the cylinder

Support the cylinder by appropriate structural points. Do not lift it by hoses, ports, sensor cables or the polished rod.

Insert pins with the joint unloaded and secure all retainers. Connect lines using correct thread and sealing methods without transferring fitting torque into unsupported ports.

Check the complete motion envelope

Cycle slowly at low pressure where permitted. Watch pin articulation, rod alignment, hose bend radius, sensor clearance and contact with nearby structure.

Then verify loaded motion, leakage, abnormal heat and pressure behavior. Record commissioning measurements for future maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cylinder tolerate side load?

Only limited side load if designed for it; persistent misalignment should be corrected in the machine.

Should pins be tight in every component?

Fits differ by design, so use the drawing and inspection limits.

When should alignment be checked?

Before pinning, through unloaded travel and again under representative load.
